Beyond the Ordinary
I chose desks as my topic for ‘beyond the ordinary’ because I wanted to study this personal space, as beyond the ordinary. This made me question what is ‘ordinary’ and how the visual representation could be also a representation of the owner. Are they just as important as the desk to capture, making the object more raw and personal to them? I believe household objects are chosen by the person and that every object also reflects a person’s personality. Desks, in particular, reflect how they can be their own still lives, reflecting the person, in a similar way to Vanitas paintings. Everyone has their own desk, and each one is different. The stories that tell are varied; A manic study desk, a dresser, or a professional setup desk, which makes desks intimate and personal.
The definition of a ‘household object’ is to be: a tangible item used within a home for daily living, including furniture, appliances, and other personal property necessary for maintaining a household.
